Subject: A Symposium this September to Remember
FROM OUR DIRECTORY
This week, our hearts are heavy and our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by Hurricane Idalia. We’re shining our weekly CSD Member Spotlight on North Carolina’s Margaret Benjamin, an LCMHC offering therapy and supervision services across the Tar Heel state. With a Doctorate in Counseling and Traumatology from Liberty University, Margaret started her career at an inpatient hospital witnessing severe real-life scenarios, learning the trade, and providing compassionate behavioral healthcare. Since 2016, she’s been a Counseling Program Branch Manager with the U.S. Marine Corps.

An effective supervisor since 2017, Margaret enjoys forming relationships and helping prepare incoming counselors for careers in mental health treatment. She often applies Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a backbone to teach mindfulness, personal values, staying present in the moment, and accepting thoughts and feelings without judgment.

If you or someone you know is starting up in the field, sync up with supervisors like Margaret on the CSD. Create a FREE account and search for a suitable fit in your state. And if you’re a supervisor, we want you in the Directory! Create a listing and promote your practice today!
FROM OUR FIELD
Mental health illness and addiction are regrettably on the rise, offering a bleak outlook for society in the short term. Now more than ever, what our industry needs is an influx of caring and qualified professionals coming into the fold. We welcome more events and communities spreading the word and creating an emphasis on clinical techniques, starting a practice, and rewarding the sacrifices we set forth.

Thanks to industry leaders like Jo Muirfield (@jo_muirhead), awareness is growing and the shortage of counselors, social workers, and supervisors could gradually be improving. Jo is spearheading this September’s The Future of Health Professionals Symposium 2023, a 10-session virtual conference of contributors from all facets of the field. As the registration page states, “This won't be some boring, academically driven conference.” It will push you to think differently through live training sessions, rich conversations, and real-life experiences that will shape the way we work.

Kicking off the festivities on September 19th will be Keynote Speaker Dr. Amy Parks, child psychologist, private practice owner, credentialed supervisor, and Founder of the Clinical Supervision Directory, a connection super-highway for supervision-seekers working towards licensure in counseling and social work across the US. Check out the full list of the Symposium’s speakers and panelists here.

With various attendance packages and an array of resources to take away, this annual Symposium is an enlightening experience hosted and attended by collaborative, compassionate colleagues looking to learn and motivated to make a difference for the future of our profession.
